Studio Science: Morton Subotnick On His Buchla Synthesizer

The electronic music pioneer explains his unique live set-up

Morton Subotnick has spent a great portion of his career evangelizing for the Buchla synthesizer. The unique instrument is a “non-keyboard” because while – in some ways – it acts like one, it’s played in a radically different way. (The Buchla has what can perhaps best be described as a joystick-style interface.) At the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp San Francisco, Subotnick led a tutorial on how he plays the Buchla, revealing that despite its complexity, it has plenty of charm.
