Gallery: Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell!

Arthur Russell entered the Downtown NYC scene in the 1970s - and by the time he passed away in 1992, his influence had permeated virtually every aspect of it: as the musical director of experimental art space The Kitchen, in collaboration with Allen Ginsberg and Ali Akbar Khan; as a disco innovator with his Loose Joints and Dinosaur L projects, and an extraordinary solo musician and singer. To honor his legacy, the Red Hot Organization released the compilation Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell, featuring more than 20 artists paying musical tribute. Over the course of two special evenings, the Red Bull Music Academy teamed up with BAM and Red Hot to bring together an all-star cast of musicians, who brought the compilation to life.

Contributing artists included: Sam Amidon, Cults, Lonnie Holley, Devonté Hynes, Redding Hunter, Little Scream, Thao Nguyen (Thao & The Get Down Stay Down), Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Rubblebucket, Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), and more. With such a huge tribute, things started a day early at BAM with rehearsals. See photos of both the rehearsals and the performance on May 29th below.
