Rescued From The Fire: Legowelt
An ongoing series in which we ask artists the record they’d risk life and limb to save from a burning inferno
I've been in this situation before actually… I was in a club once where the building burnt down. It was in the late 1990's and I was playing with Orgue Electronique at a club in Utrecht. Just as we were about to play and pressed the start button on the drum machine, the lights went out and someone came in and said "there's a fire!" We went outside and saw that the whole roof of the club was on fire. We quickly then had to go in to get the synths out. We would never have done that with records though. Nowadays, records are the last thing I would save from a fire. I'd probably try to put the fire out first.
But if I had to choose one, I'd have to pick Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92. I remember buying it at the shop when it first came out. Just the way it sounds and the weird melodies. It was kind of empirical, like a perfect example of how an album should be put together, even though it was a collection of tracks he made. I've listened to the record so much, also the CD, I've got the CD too. My favorite track is track two on the C side, "Schottkey 7th Path". It's still a point of discussion with synthesizer freaks just how he made the sounds. There can be fierce discussions about what synthesizer it was, or what reverb he used, it can go on for hours.
