Modeselektor Meet Synth Whiz Charanjit Singh in India

In December 2013, Red Bull Music Academy invited Modeselektor on a tour of India. While the Berlin duo was visiting, they met proto-acid house producer Charanjit Singh to find out more about his beguiling 1982 curio Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat.

In the day between their two shows in India, Sebastian Szary and Gernot Bronsert traveled throughout Mumbai, seeing just a tiny bit of what the massive city has to offer. Late in the day, they met up with Singh in his modest apartment to talk about the recently reissued 1982 record. At the time of its release, Ten Ragas was largely ignored. Far ahead of its time, Singh played traditional Indian melodies beneath the same steady beat that would be the platform for pioneering Chicago and Detroit producers a few years later.
