Der Klang der Familie Playlists

In 2012, authors Felix Denk and Sven von Thülen unraveled the story of Berlin’s early techno and house community in previously unseen detail. Catching up with a sprawling cast of key players from the scene’s formative years around the time of German reunification, their oral history Der Klang Der Familie shed light on one of the most exciting periods for electronic music in any city. To coincide with the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the English translation of Denk and von Thülen’s ambitious and rewarding work is now available.

Der Klang der Familie

We compiled four playlists from the book, courtesy of former resident DJs at some of Berlin’s most legendary clubs and parties. Ranging from trailblazing acid outpost Ufo to original techno rave series Tekknozid, iconic E-Werk predecessor Planet, and Tresor’s house-heavy Globus floor, here’s a little taste of what Berlin sounded like in the early 1990’s.

Globus - Terrible

Planet - Dr. Motte

Tekknozid - Tanith

Ufo - Jonzon
