Gallery: A Night of Spiritual Jazz with Kamasi Washington, Pharoah Sanders & The Sun Ra Arkestra

Three generations of trailblazing jazz artists get together for a celestial night of transportive tones

Three generations of trailblazing jazz artists crossed paths at the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse on Sunday, May 8th, as Kamasi Washington shared a bill with Pharoah Sanders and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Complete with obelisk-shaped surround sound speakers, pyramidal light boxes and psychedelic oil paint projections provided by visual collective The Mill, the stage was set for a celestial night of transportive tones.

Following a spirited performance by the Sun Ra Arkestra, whose tireless bandleader Marshall Allen inspiringly led the charge at 91 years of age, Pharoah Sanders put a spell on the audience with a dynamic and purposeful recital on tenor. Kamasi Washington capped off the night with his band, The Next Step – their set providing powerful testament to the communal and uplifting power of jazz at its best.
