From September 8th - 11th, 2016, the inaugural Red Bull Music Academy Weekender in Sydney brought a vast range of inspiring musicians from diverse fields to unique venues all across the city. There were collaborations, premieres and performances galore, including the debut Australian performance of Larry Heard as Mr. Fingers and Gigi Masin, Young Marco and Jonny Nash performing as Gaussian Curve in the stunning, once-in-a-lifetime setting of the Bradley’s Head amphitheatre in the Sydney Harbour National Park. Elsewhere, Stones Throw celebrated their 20th anniversary with a rousing party featuring label head Peanut Butter Wolf alongside LA electro king Egyptian Lover, while inimitable Detroit duo Dopplereffekt brought their electro-science to the Marrickville Bowling Club and Flight Facilities’ collaboration with the Sydey Symphony Orchestra drew a sold-out crowd of 15,000 fans.

The Sydney Weekender also featured multiple artist lectures, including a conversation with esteemed beatmaker (and RBMA alumni) Ta-ku in conjunction with the world premiere of his (m)edian directorial debut, an examination of DIY soundsystem culture across Australia and a hardware workshop with Lucy Cliche and Xosar, as well as a lecture with none other than the legendary Larry Heard in the shadows of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. All in all, it was a unique experience of education and celebration, and an exciting reflection of the Sydney scene.
