Studio Science: Larry Gus
The DFA affiliate and RBMA alumni on his writing process and sampling techniques
Inspired by the rural environment of his hometown of Veria, Greece, multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer Panagiotis Melidis started to write music as Larry Gus in 2006. After releases via a number of outlets, his powerful combination of groove-based music, late ’60s and early ’70s free jazz, sample-based sounds and psych pop melodies found a home on New York’s DFA label. With a refined vision and transgressive live shows, Gus remains one of the most powerful musical assets of contemporary Greece.
In this Studio Science, filmed at Athens’ Benaki Museum, Gus (who is also an alumni of Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo 2014) shared insights into his writing process, sampling techniques and live set-up, an intimate session capturing his energetic musical vision.
