Studio Science: Karsh Kale
The tabla pioneer showcases the electronic version of the Indian classical instrument
Born in Britain and raised in New York, the producer and multi-instrumentalist Karsh Kale is regarded as one of the most dynamic artists with Indian roots, successfully straddling classical and contemporary worlds and fusing music from the East and West. In the past, he's collaborated with artists like Sting, Herbie Hancock and Alicia Keys as well as becoming a celebrated film composer, capable of integrating the complex rhythmic patterns of “tabla bol” within more familiar electronic structures. Such a sense of displacement is at the heart of Karsh Kale’s work, which sees him reworking familiar elements stylistically and contextually to form entirely new sonic landscapes.
In this Studio Science, the first ever filmed in India, Karsh Kale details the design and use of his electronic tabla, outlining sonic and songwriting inspirations before performing with the eight-member Karsh Kale Collective, featuring special guests Shadow and Light.
